My email of Jan. 1998 to the rest of the group. The "Qabal" is my feeble attempt at a humorous nickname for the group. To: jw@bway.net,j.s.tyre@worldnet.att.net,bennett@peacefire.org,jamie@mccarthy.org,sethf@mit.edu Subject: Idea Reply-to: jellicle@inch.com,jw@bway.net,j.s.tyre@worldnet.att.net,bennett@peacefire.org,jamie@mccarthy.org,sethf@mit.edu Date: Sat, 24 Jan 1998 14:37:35 -0400 This gives me an opportunity to present an idea that's been kicking around in the back of my tiny cranium for a while: www.censorware.org A site occupying the opposite corner from filteringfacts.org and netparents.org, containing news and biased commentary about internet censoring, as well as detailed instructions on how to bypass that censoring. Dedicated to the philosophy that NO ONE has the right to control what ANYONE else sees. It should, however, contain little or no profanity or other censor-bait material, so that when it is banned by various programs, the reasons for the banning will be clear. I think this website could fulfill the goals that Bennett discusses for Peacefire. It could also be fairly distant from other groups, if necessary. I envision a cooperative, distributed, site maintenance arrangement: I'm interested in writing about PICS, for example, and Bennett may wish to concentrate on his specialty of censorware in schools, etc. etc. etc. As many people who are trustworthy and vaguely competent at HTML could be included. Some questions for the Qabal: 1) Put the CWP name behind this? Pages at EthSpec could be relocated or incorporated. 2) Other ideas? I've been halfway to registering the censorware.org name a half dozen times now, and each time I keep thinking that I don't individually have enough time to keep up such a site in the manner in which it should be kept. -- Michael
