After a bit more than three years in, I had the opportunity to recommend one of the men underneath me for a meritorious promotion to Corporal. One of my crew was a young man by the name of Cordova. Now, Cordova was a smart-ass. A veteran of East L.A., he'd grown up hard and didn't care for a lousy white-boy like me. He was, in short, a punk. He treated me with the sort of disrespect that would have gotten him in disciplinary trouble if I had ever cared to do so. Unfortunately, he was also the smartest (save for me), hardest-working (bar none) guy in the section. Furthermore, he had the most leadership potential. After a brief mental struggle I recommended him whole- heartedly and fought to get him the promotion. I worked up both a letter of recommendation and a speech to our commanding officer. My eloquent advocacy was successful; he received the promotion. This being a true story though, there was no fairy tale outcome. He continued slandering and deriding me at every opportunity, without the faintest hint of gratitude, until I left active duty.
